Get Started with Videcap

Welcome to Videcap. This guide walks you from a fresh install to your first exported video in five short steps. If you only have a couple of minutes, follow steps 1, 2, and 4: create an account, install the extension, then click Start Capture.

1. Create your Videcap account

Head to videcap.com/signup and sign up with your work email and a password, or use the Continue with Google button if your team uses Google Workspace. You will land in your workspace dashboard with an empty Library waiting for your first recording.

Every account belongs to a workspace. If a teammate has already invited you, accept the invite from your inbox first. Otherwise, the workspace is created for you on signup and you become its first member.

2. Install the Videcap Chrome extension

The Videcap web app lives at videcap.com, but the actual recording happens inside a small Chrome extension that captures your tab or screen, your microphone, your webcam, and your click positions, then uploads everything to your workspace.

Open the Chrome Web Store and search for Videcap: Magic Capture.

Click Add to Chrome, then confirm in the permission dialog.

Click the puzzle-piece icon in your Chrome toolbar and pin Videcap so its icon stays visible. You will reach for it every time you record.

The extension does not record anything by itself: no autocapture, no background recording, no telemetry. It records only when you click Start Capture in its popup, and only the tab or screen you select.

3. Sign in from the extension

The first time you click the Videcap icon in your toolbar you will see a Sign in button. Clicking it opens a tab on videcap.com so the extension can pair with the account you created in step 1.

Click the Videcap icon in the toolbar.

In the popup, click Sign in. A new tab opens.

Sign in with your Videcap email and password (or Google).

The tab closes itself and the extension popup updates to show the recording panel. You are now signed in.

Sign-in only happens once per browser. After this, opening the popup goes straight to the recording panel.

4. Make your first recording

From the recording panel you can capture three sources, with optional overlays.

Pick a source

Record this tab. Captures only the active Chrome tab, plus its audio. Best for product demos, web app walkthroughs, and anything browser-based. Audio from the tab is captured cleanly with no microphone bleed.

Record full screen. Captures everything on your screen. Use this when you need to switch between apps mid-recording (Figma, Slack, your IDE).

Record window. Captures one specific desktop window without the rest of your screen showing. Good for keynote-style presentations.

Pick your overlays

Microphone. Toggle on to narrate. Pick the input device from the dropdown if you have more than one.

Webcam. Toggle on to add a circular webcam overlay in the corner of the recording. The position and size are configurable in the editor afterward.

Smart zoom on clicks. Videcap automatically zooms in on whatever you click. The result feels like a hand-edited tutorial without you doing any work in the editor.

Hit Start Capture

Give the recording a title (optional, you can rename later) and click Start Capture. Recording begins immediately. There is no countdown by default so you do not waste seconds; if you want a countdown, enable it in the workspace settings.

To stop, click the Videcap icon in your toolbar and press Stop. The popup will show "Uploading..." for a few seconds, then a notification will tell you the editor is ready.

5. Edit and polish in the browser

When the upload finishes, the editor opens in a new tab. Everything you need is in one timeline.

Trim. Drag the handles at either end of the clip to cut intro fumbles or trailing silence.

Zoom and pan. Add a zoom-in on any moment, or let smart-zoom-on-clicks do it for you automatically.

Backgrounds. Pick a gradient, solid colour, image, or one of the built-in mockups (browser frame, MacBook, iPhone) to wrap the recording in a polished container.

Webcam shape and corner. Move the webcam bubble around, change its border colour, or hide it entirely.

AI voiceover. Replace your spoken narration with a natural-sounding ElevenLabs voice in the language you choose. Useful for re-recording one section without scrubbing the whole take.

Annotations and text. Drop text overlays, arrows, or callouts on top of the video.

Edits autosave. You can close the tab and come back later from your Library.

6. Export and share

When the cut feels right, click Export in the editor toolbar.

Pick a resolution. 1080p is the default and works for almost everything; 4K is available for premium plans.

Click Export. The render queues in the background, you can close the tab.

You will get a notification (and an email if you have email notifications on) when the MP4 is ready.

From the Exports page you can copy a shareable link, download the MP4 directly, or send it as a workspace share to a teammate.
